I hit the fox river at night 3/15/06. I tried some walleye shelves down in Dundee with jig and twisters, but no success. I went to Otto and only caught 1 crappie on a mini mite/wax worm under a slip bobber. No hits on jig twisters or on crankbaits. :thumbs_do

Water Level: Way up, maybe 2 to 3 feet higher than normal.
Clarity: Dirty, muddy
Water temp: 43.1 F

Note, stream flow rates below.

Algonquin: 1450 ft3/sec

South Elgin: 2015 ft3/sec

What does that mean. Stay on the shore or if you go in the water, just get your feet wet. Don't wade the main current!

Good advice! The river is just short of raging at the moment:o

After looking at the weather forecast it looks like we've got a while to wait before the fishing gets REALLY good:wink:

Hi Darth,

I think your right. Plummeting temps will not help.

I agree 100%, with the snow that is suppose to fall is gonna make the water temp cool down really quick.

Quick falling water temps = :give up:

Hey - where did you find stream flow #s for South Elgin? I haven't found that station to put out any streamflow data for a couple of years now.

I start by going into the search engine google. I just type in water data. The first one that google brings up is what you want. Click on this link.

1. Make sure "USA stream flow" is highlighted
2. You will see a map of the USA. Click anywhere on the state of Illinois.
3. Click on "State Wide Stream Flow Table". This table will list all flow rates for streams in Illinois.
4. In the box labeled "Select site by Number" type Fox river, then click on the Go button next to it. This will list all the flow rates of the fox river for each pool location it has access too.

Real time flow rate at South Elgin as of 3:46pm today is 1990 ft3/sec

In case you have not heard the BulletBobber is a castable mini planer board that reverses direction when given a little tug. I invented it for rivers and if the current is slow you can make it go all over the place down stream without recasting. I will quote one happy user "It is the best thing that ever happened to shore fishing".

Thanks Steve!

Actually that is not the streamflow for S. Elgin and you will be screwing yourself by going with those numbers. Look at the top of that column where you got the figure '1990'. It says "Long-term median flow." 1990 is an average for all March 29ths looking back many years.

The S. Elgin location hasn't monitored streamflow for a couple of years now which is a shame. You'll have to look at Algonquin (currently not reporting) or Montgomery to get an idea of what the flow actually is. Montgomery might be the best as I think Algonquin can be misleading depending if the gate is open or closed. :)

Ron: I was wondering why the flow seemed high when the water came down some. I was looking at the median, which is not correct. I should be looking at the real time data. Thanks for the correction.

Steve,

The only problem is there no longer is any realtime streamflow data for South Elgin.

Maybe someday we'll get it back. :tan:

I sure do like having the online access to these readings. I can look at them and decide where I'm going to fish before leaving home.
