Yep the rainbows in Lake Diefenbaker are from the fish farm. I heard they cannot reproduce so they will eventually disappear from the lake. There sure are some huge fish waiting to be caught in that lake.:o

ttaylor99
06-09-2007, 12:05 AM
Not all the fish in the lake are form the fish farm...Does the Bow River flow in to the lake??? Rainbows are native to the Bow. Also there was extensive stocking done on the lake in the 80's and 90's and there is also evidence that some of the fish are reproducing in the lake. Was this fish a Triploid???More then likely. So there in lies the question..How wild was this fish? All of us are hunters here right? So if a world record escaped from a hunt farm and someone shot it, is it a world record? So if this trout did escape from the trout farm, is it a world record? How does one prove it? I still think it is a great feat, but should it dethrown a wild steelhead that grew to 42 lbs? Sorry, if I offend anyone...Just asking how you feel?

SilentArcher
06-09-2007, 12:14 AM
Thats a good point you bring up ttaylor. I think that the catching and reeling in of the fish would be the same whether it was wild or a domestic fish farm fish. I am sure that this fish was one of the escapees, but still an awesome specimen regardless of where it came from.
I forgot that yes there are some wild rainbows in Diefenbaker.

ttaylor99
06-09-2007, 12:20 AM
I also applaud the feat. Don't get me wrong I am just asking what others opinions are....These guys still caught the fish.

Bearhunter
06-09-2007, 12:23 AM
Is a fish out of the walleye farm @ Echo Lake a "farm fish".

Hell no, those fish live in the wild, get fat on natural prey, and are worthy of the record....

soolinearcher
06-09-2007, 01:36 AM
guys thanks for bringing this topic up, I didn't want to bring it up and sh!t on anybodies parade.

this was probally a fish bred and raised for size, selective breeding, nutrition (not sure, but i am guessing yes). is it right? if so i'm sure fence hunters would like to see there animal in B&C. Is a fence grown deer or elk that escapes eligible for record books, what if they where in the wild for 3-4 years before harvest? Or is just outside of the high fence eligible for B&C.

I am not sure what the answer is? will this record stand, yes. what do i think should be done, all commercial fish should be tagged before being put into farm, possibly clipped, or genetic markers, genetically breed them with a certain mark to distinguish them from wild fish (im not a scientist, but im sure we have the technology).

anyways congrats guys, what a monster!!!!!!!1111

To answer some of your questions about steelhead and triploid and world record status. I already talked to the world record coordinator about our fishing and the possibility of being triploid rainbow and she told me their will be no changes to the rules, Every rainbow in igfa books is either a steelhead or most likely triploid. So yes this will 99.9% become the new all tackle World record and the largest rainbow ever recorded caught by and angler from line. Actually if u guys can help me to see if u can find any link or proof of a larger rainbow even raised anywhere, or netted.
Yes the fish will be sent to a fish biologist to be researched for age, male or female status, and hopefully where it came from. I Already have a guy lined up but asked him to fly up here so I can meet him personally. These fellows have been in touch with me ever since the 33.3lber. I told him one day my lure will pass by the largest rainbow ever and he won't be able to resist it. I just didn't know it would happen so soon.
So my brother and I did everything in our power to make this happen, by releasing every rainbow over 20lbs we thought one of these will grow to our all tackle record. I still can't believe the sight I saw when he hit the surface, my arms went num, everything happened so fast like i was in a dream. Anyway I am writing our story of our record hunt up to the last day. Not sure when it will be done, we have saved all our video's also of all the 20's and 30's we released hoping for this day to come.

there is also evidence that some of the fish are reproducing in the lake.

We've caught rainbows at Dief. that had eggs in them. If fertilized, I would assume the eggs would be viable.

ttaylor99
06-09-2007, 10:48 PM
Nope, The triploids still have eggs! They are no good though from what I have been told! Also there is a lot of other facts that go in to Rainbows reproducing running water, the right oxygen concentration, water temp etc. There is trout that are spawning in the tributaries from what I have been told though!

Well, here it is folks.....my two cents on this, what a surprise! LOL :D
NOTHING can be taken away from the fact that the "Geeks" (my new trout fishing heroes :thumbs_up :shade: ) caught this fish "in the wild" and as "fair game" and it deserves to be recognized as a "World Record" NO QUESTION, BUT......it does need to be noted in the record books as a Triploid!!!
No matter how you look at it, it does vary from a "wild" trout in that it has been genetically altered to grow at an abnormal rate....FACT....which does give it a slight advantage over the wild trout, and should be noted for no other reason than this.

AGAIN....CONGRATS GUYS!!!:thumbs_up :thumbs_up :D

BeerSlayer1
06-11-2007, 06:28 PM

There is a chance that it's a wild, natural bred and raised rainbow (although it seems unlikely). I wonder if there's plans to test it and see.

k fella's, i saw this fish the morning it was caught to help verify its legality. I even have pictures to back it up. Give these guys the credit they deserve. Sean and Adam fished almost daily for over a year to figure out how and where to get larger rainbows. Quit being jealous and starting BS rumours that have no basis on anything. If your so envious and need to start rumours to justify the truth of this fish, go put in the amount of effort these guys have. Then maybe, just maybe, you can be in the select group of guys that can say he or she has caught a monster rainbow.
