Space saving ideas.

And of course if one wants to do any hiking/packing, what you can carry is what you bring. Organizing a pack can be a chore but get easier as one gets more into it. I was looking for groundsheets on Mountain Equipment Coops website and they have tips pop up on the right hand side of th screen as your browsing. This one stuck out for me.

Get an extra stuff sack. Pull apart your tent, so you can have the poles, pegs, fly and main body separate from each other in smaller parcels. This way one can distribute them as they see fit, instead of figuring out where to put the one big item. Also storing a fly separate from the tent will allow one to keep the tent dry if the fly is wet.

Whiteflag had a nifty idea about attaching a 5 gallon bucket to the bottom of an external frame pack. The sleeping bag can go in there and food can get stored in it when finding that spot to camp, and it can also be used for a seat.

I'll keep writing them down as I get or discover them.

Seems like you are getting pretty serious about your gear, are you planning a trip?

Most everything I pack is removed from it's own package. Then I will combine like items together in zip-lok bags. One reason for this is I have found you can wrap things up tighter and those little bags do come in handy . Second reason for this is to cut down on the amount of trash that might get left behind. I even go as far as removing my asprin from a bottle and only packing a few in my first aid kit.
The real goal is pack as much as you can as light as you can. Packing a pail isn't the best for cutting weight but it's one of the handiest things I ever did,and will continue to do.

To be honest I had have had a cheap external frame pack that has seen real little use. When I was in college it got its most use. My old tent got tons of use, but when it comes to packing and growing up in SE sask, there wasn't much for what I would consider a decent packing adventure close by. I have a new pack now and a new tent and am always wanting to get gear. A buddy of mine planned a bit of a trip last year on the frenchman, and it will get done eventually. Also I want to do the Pacific Rim and there is a multi day skiathon in Quebec, that as soon as I found out about the camping part of it I figured that sounds like something I have to do.
